observed at schubas.

April 24th, 2009

the other evening i attended the great lake swimmers at schubas in chicago. i arrived somewhat late to find that the band was stranded somewhere between indianapolis and chicago with an e of about 11pm (it was 9). the show was also currently sold out. luckily a guy was going in as we found out the news and offered a ticket for $10. i took it as nina knew she’d be able to finagle her way in some how (she did, moments later, as per). i’d been looking forward to seeing gls for a while now. i’d been a fan after they’d been suggested by mike s about a year point five ago. i was a bit curious how the live show would be, since they are a relatively “slow” tempoed band. so, as i waited, kate maki played sans band since their equipment was with the gls’ injured van. she was great, her voice a mix of neko case and jenny lewis, but with a guitar style all her own-like someone rocking out to a record in their bedroom. luckily, the great lake swimmers made it, played a great show and encore. they played all my favorite bangers and slow jams, tony even played a mini set-within-a set by himself of a few songs about light. it was a great show and i’m glad i was able to squeeze in.

skyline1twitterso here are two new things i’ve been working on. one is a logo for a friend and the other is just sort of an experiement in Photoshop. I’d like to see how “printy” I can get Photoshop to be for me. So far so good.

march madness

March 29th, 2009

so i haven’t posted in a bit, mostly because twitter is taking the place of the “long form” blog for me. that, and facebook is filling the void as well. lots has happened but i am drawing a blank right now. i have a trial interview this week in which i will be designing some shirts o the fly. i’ll see how that goes. i finished a few pieces for my “portfolio” recently that i’m pretty happy with. they are included in this post. i am looking forward to the impending arrival of rae; hoping the weather holds out for us.andrew11

coffee and others.

March 11th, 2009

So i decided today to make my coffee (via bodum french press) differently. I have always felt insecure about my skills in making one of my favorite beverages. This time, I cut the amount of whole beans in half. In doing so, I believe I achieved a better taste. This all just goes to show that 1.) You can teach an old dog new tricks, 2.) It’s never too late, and
3.) Sometimes less is more.

I am trying to do more these days. A few freelance gigs and some business cards are on the way. I am also trying to get myself in gear and fix up my web skills as well.

In the next few days keep an eye out for a brief article that I decided to write about The L Word and it’s series finale.

yet another update

February 27th, 2009

i have also created a new flickr photostream dedicated solely to some portfolio pieces of mostly production work. since i am cheap, it’s purpose is to keep from hitting the 200 photo limit and thus losing visiblity of older jpegs. so, check it out and if you need some photos worked on or a nifty t shirt design ( i am currently working on a drag race shirt) hit me up.

a few new.

January 30th, 2009

here are a few new things i worked on this week, in between everything else. i’m hoping to get some blender work up here soon, when i find it.

*edit-I decided to remove all the “new work” images, since i now have a nifty little link over there—>

with my portfolio on coroflot. so click away and check it out. thanks!

chris pureka, beat kitchen, chicago

chris pureka, beat kitchen, chicago

nina and i went to see chris pureka last night at the beat kitchen. it was my first show there so i was very excied. chris was also playing with more of a band this tour, so i looked forward to that as well. there were two fiddlers and bass. it was a great show, opener was great and the crowd was good. could have used a bit more energy but it was fun. it was really different being around a bunch of gay ladies. or presumably gay, i should say. very fun night, followed up by some late night pick me up. i also got chris’ new ep, chimera, which i highly recommend if at least just for the wagon wheel cover.

check out my flickr for more photos.
